Operational risk covers the technology and infrastructure supporting the trading platform. In an A-book model, the broker routes every client trade directly to a liquidity provider. The client’s position is offset immediately — the broker earns the spread or commission and carries no directional market exposure. Risk management at the broker level focuses primarily on counterparty and operational risk rather than market risk.
A-book operations are capital-efficient in calm markets and exposed mainly to basis risk — the gap between when a client trade executes and when the hedge placement is confirmed. That gap is where money disappears in fast markets [YourFintech, 2024].
A B-book broker internalises client trades, acting as the counterparty. The broker profits when clients lose and faces losses when clients win. This model generates higher margin income in normal conditions but requires rigorous risk controls — particularly around net exposure monitoring and hedging thresholds.

Most brokers operate a hybrid model in practice. High-value clients, algorithmic traders, and accounts with consistently profitable records are typically routed A-book. Retail accounts and smaller positions are B-booked. The criteria for classification — and the thresholds that trigger rerouting — form a core part of the broker’s risk framework.
Margin is the mechanism that limits a broker’s exposure to client default. When a client’s losses reduce the account balance below the margin requirement, the broker has the right — and the obligation under regulatory frameworks — to issue a margin call or initiate liquidation.
Managing this process at scale requires position monitoring across all accounts simultaneously. A broker running 10,000 active accounts cannot manually review margin levels; the systems must alert and act automatically. Margin calls are also a reputational event. A forward contract is an over-the-counter (OTC) derivative contract between two parties to exchange specified amounts of two currencies at a pre-agreed exchange rate on a set future date [Milltech, 2024]. The exchange rate is fixed at the outset, making forwards the standard instrument for locking in rates against known future exposure. One-month or three-month tenors are most commonly used, as they typically offer better liquidity and lower transaction costs [Milltech, 2024].
Currency swaps are OTC derivatives in which two counterparties exchange notional principal amounts in different currencies at the current spot rate, with a simultaneous agreement to reverse the exchange at a predetermined forward rate on a future date [Milltech, 2024]. This structure allows both parties to hedge currency risk by locking in exchange rates for future transactions and aligning cash flows in different currencies.
FX options grant the holder the right, but not the obligation, to exchange a specified amount of one currency for another on or before a specified expiration date at a predetermined rate [Milltech, 2024]. This asymmetry makes options useful when a broker wants to protect against downside exposure while retaining the ability to benefit if the market moves favourably. The cost of this flexibility is the option premium, which is paid upfront and is not refunded if the option is not exercised [Milltech, 2024].
FX futures are exchange-traded contracts to buy or sell a specific quantity of currency at a fixed price on a future date [Milltech, 2024]. Unlike OTC instruments, futures are standardised and cleared centrally, which reduces counterparty risk. Positions can be closed before maturity through an offsetting trade, with the central exchange settling the price difference.
In most regulated jurisdictions, pre-trade risk controls are a regulatory requirement, not simply a best practice.
